Read a proposal for a Research Center that will be dedicated to innovative research and teaching in the areas of field architecture, archaeological mapping and landscape archaeology. The Research Center will be affiliated with several schools at the University of Pennsylvania; the School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Fine Arts as well as the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The Research Center will be unique in the United States, utilizing the latest scientific methods for practical training and research and will promote the development of intellectual theory and methodological practice within an interdisciplinary environment. You are invited to participate in a questionnaire which has to do with the possibility of a new Master’s program in Mapping and Field Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. Mapping Augustan Rome-Spring 1999 [Art History 725]

Designed as a graduate seminar at the University of Pennsylvania, the goal of this project is to create a new period map of the Augustan monuments, buildings, roads and aqueducts of Rome. The map with written entries and commentary will be based upon archaeological, historical and literary evidence and will be computer generated. This seminar was taught by Lothar Haselberger and D. G. Romano, representing the departments of Art History and Classical Studies and the graduate programs of Ancient History and Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World at the University of Pennsylvania. Mugello Valley Mapping Project-Summer 2000

Planned to begin in the summer of 2000 in the Mugello Valley, Italy, northeast of Florence. This project is being undertaken by D.G. Romano in conjunction with Professor Umberto Moscatelli of the University of Macerata and under the auspices Mugello Valley Archaeological Project, Professor P.G. Warden, Southern Methodist University, Director. The overall project is jointly sponsored by the Meadows School of the Arts, SMU, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The Mugello Valley Mapping Project has as its focus the analysis of 200 sq. km of land with particular emphasis on the history and land planning of the Roman and Medieval periods.

GIS Applications in Archaeology-Fall 2000 [Classical Studies 515/AAMW 515]

The first collaboration of its kind between the departments of Classical Studies and Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. An introduction to the procedures and uses of GIS in modern archaeological field and laboratory work. The course will introduce the student to computerized GIS, discuss the philosophy and theory of its use, as well as the analytical potential of its utilization.
