Hundreds gathered at the Penn Museum on June 9 to witness the unveiling of the U.S. Postal Service's stamp honoring the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. Designed by Richard Sheaff of Scottsdale, AZ, and created by artist Lonnie Busch of Franklin, NC, the stamp features a stylized depiction of a Greek runner and is reminiscent of the artwork on ancient Greek black-figure vases--especially the one that inspired this stamp and is part of the Museum's collection, and is online in their Ancient Greek World section, www.museum.upenn.edu/Greek_World/Index.html

For a glimpse of the ceremony see the brief slide show.

For more information about the program and the commemorative cachet featuring the stamp on an envelope with images of Penn Museum and the Greek vase that inspired the stamp, see the Museum's website. The site also contains a list of the 173 known Penn alumni Olympic athletes, several of whom were at the ceremony.

For technical details about the stamp, see the U.S. Postal Service's website, http://shop.usps.com/.
