City and Landscape of Roman Corinth
Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World 625
Classical Studies 625
Fall 1998
D. G. Romano

The graduate seminar examined the literary, historical and archaeological evidence for the Roman city and surrounding territorium. Emphasis was given to the planning and evolution of the Caesarian colony of 44 B.C. as well as the Flavian colony of the 70's A.D. Some of the results of the Corinth Computer Project, 1988-present, were incorporated into the seminar and used as a vehicle for discussion and further study.

Each of the students were assigned individual buildings and structures of the Roman forum. Their term project comprised a detailed architectural analysis of the building including a discussion of its chronological phases, its location in the forum and exactly how the building worked with respect to the other structures in the forum. Another objective was to compare the building or structure with other known examples in the Roman world. Each student was asked to include an Autocad drawing of some element of the building or a part of their project. Instruction in Autocad was part of the curriculum of the seminar and was given by Nicholas L. Stapp, Research Associate, Corinth Computer Project.

Each student delivered a report on the subject of their building or structure and submitted a detailed 25-30 page paper. The seminar was enhanced by having a number of guest lecturers:
